FATHER of two and newly married Mackay man Luke Buckton is back on his feet and walking again, 11 weeks after he almost died in a motorcycle crash at Paget.

It is astonishing to think the 31-year-old is walking considering when paramedics arrived at the crash on May 27 he was not breathing.

He was airlifted to Townsville Hospital and put in the intensive care unit, where his wife Mel hadn't left his bedside.

It has been a long road though, from being cleared of spinal injuries, starting to breathe on his own again, being able to slightly move his hands and feet and rotate his neck.

In early July he was able to start eating pureed foods and medium fluids.

By July 17 he was able to stand with assistance from one person and then two days later he was allowed to have normal fluids and meals.

His mother Nadine Buckton said she was a blubbering mess the first time Luke called her after his serious crash.

"When I first got his phone call I thought it was Mel or his sister, I was a blubbering mess, it is excellent," she said.

"It is very awesome, it is just terrific that he is going in leaps and bounds now."

She said she considered him a "superman" after hearing from the physiotherapist that someone with a brain injury like he had was supposed to be incapable of achieving what he already had.

"The exercises the physios are doing with him are helping him so much but as they say it is up to him and he is being so determined," she said.

"But he wouldn't be game to be any other way with us, he has two girls and a wife and a lot to fight for."

Mrs Buckton said Luke had two milestones coming up, he turns 32 on August 21 and will celebrate his one year wedding anniversary on the 26th.

"It has been tough but we just hope he keeps on progressing," she said.

Friends of the Buckton family have been raising money to take the pressure of Mel as she looks after Luke.

Her work has also allowed her to work five hours a day at its Townsville office.
