Mackay High students ‘cheese’ing their own creations

Teens get dairy creative in the kitchen for the chance to star in the Great Ocean Road’s calendar

MACKAY State High School students are getting dairy creative in the kitchen as part of Saputo’s Great Ocean Road – Cheese Your Own Creationprogram.

The home economics students join more than 2500 students across 76 Australian schools who are designing their own dairy creations in hopes to be included in the 2021 Great Ocean Road Calendar.

Home Economics teacher Lorraine McLennan said her students were enjoying the challenge.

“Cheese Your Own Creationis encouraging our students to use their imagination to bring amazing creations to life out of everyday dairy products,” Ms McLennan said.

“They’ve come up with quite a range of things including chicken and parmesan mince meatballs in a creamy sauce through to cupcakes and desserts including mousses.”

Ms McLennan said the task required the students to think about product development, decoration and presentation – in line with the Australian curriculum which had changed the traditional form of home economics into Design and Technologies.

The 12 students with the winning dairy-inspired creations will each receive $250 for their schools.
