The layout of the biggest piece of infrastructure to rollout in Mackay’s Northern Beaches for decades is slowly becoming clearer with the release of new architectural designs.

Earlier this month, Mackay Regional Council revealed details for Stage 1A of its $25-million Northern Beaches Hub when it released the project for tender.

Drawings detailed a multipurpose court and nature play area complete with a giant “Broc the Crocodile” and footprints from its own character, Berkey the Turkey.

The council has also revealed more of Stage 1B which will house the modern library and “community hub”, as part of its approval process for the hub between Rosewood Dr and Eimeo Rd.

Outside the library is a courtyard with bicycle parks, an after hours book drop off, plus three separate car parks catering for 61 vehicles.

Inside the library hub are three meeting rooms, an acoustic workshop and a “robust” workshop, three community rooms plus a multipurpose room, a cafe with a bar, a kitchen and kitchenette, and bathroom facilities on both the ground and upper floor.

The library also has sections for computers, story time, periodicals and young adults.

The council submitted its development application to the state government in September and it was approved in full in November.

Mayor Greg Williamson earlier said it was “very exciting” to approach the build environment part of the project and it would be “fantastic” to see “shovels in the ground”.

An aquatics facility is proposed for Stage 2 but Mr Williamson said it was subject to budget considerations and stage and federal government funding.

The federal government put in $6.5 million towards the hub with the council fronting the rest of the costs.
