Mackay City attack left one man in hospital after he was allegedly punched in the face repeatedly at Wood St taxi rank

Update: A serious charge has since been downgraded in the face of further police investigations.

UPDATE: An assault complaint against a man charged with grievous bodily harm over an incident at a Mackay CBD taxi rank has been withdrawn.

As a result the serious charge has been downgraded.

It is alleged the 24 year old punched another man in the face about 9.05pm on Wood St.

The 24 year old victim allegedly fell to thse ground and was punched again.

He was taken to Mackay Base Hospital with facial injuries.

The alleged attacker was arrested after a brief struggle with police.

He was initially charged with grievous bodily harm and obstructing police in the performance of their duties.

However, the assault complaint has since been withdrawn.

As a result a police spokesman said the alleged attacker was now charged with being a public nuisance and obstructing police.

He was granted watch-house bail and the case will be mentioned again in August. Police continue to investigate the incident.

EARLIER: A man waiting for a taxi was allegedly punched in the face repeatedly even as he fell to the ground.

Police allege the man was standing in the taxi rank on Wood St when he was attacked by a 24-year-old man about 9pm Sunday.

Senior Constable Steve Smith said the man was punched in the face again as he fell to the ground.

While the victim was taken to hospital for facial injuries, the 24 year old allegedly fled the scene and was found in Gregory St shortly after.

Constable Smith said police would allege the man struggled against police but was eventually restrained and arrested.

He was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and obstructing police.

He is expected to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court today.
