Mackay and Whitsunday region on track for wet weather record

A whopping 77mm was recorded in Sarina in less than 24 hours as parts of the region come within striking distance of new rainfall records.

Mackay and the Whitsundays are on track for a record August rainfall after steady rainfall overnight sent totals soaring.

Sarina has recorded a whopping 77mm since 9am Monday, the highest in the region soaking up a surface trough that is dumping its healthy rainfall that is expected to ease on Tuesday.

Mackay has recorded more than 54mm with that total expected to increase, while Proserpine has received 62mm.

Further inland, Moranbah recorded 56mm since 9am Monday.

Carmila recorded 69mm while Koumala was slightly lower with 63mm.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said several areas were within “striking distance” of setting a new record for August rainfall.
