The Mackay Cutters women’s team has created history for the region, triumphing in their debut BMD Cup game in Brisbane at the weekend.
The women dominated from start to finish, taking a 30-8 victory over the Seagulls.
It was an impressive display of skill, teamwork and determination.
Head coach Marco Peters had described their preparation as “clunky,” but it didn’t show on the field.
“Our effort areas kept us in the game,” Peters said.
“There were some real positive signs there and some real things we can improve on.”
Having maintained much of their Gold Stars line up from last season, the Cutters were bold in their movement of the ball, ensuring their new young guns and other NRLW talent were used to the best of their abilities.
Alicia Martin kicked things off for the Cutters with a try in the 12th minute, setting the tone for what was to come.
The Seagulls tried to put up a fight, but they were no match for the class and skill of the Cutters line-up.
Samara Luta proved to be a force to be reckoned with, scoring back-to-back tries just before half time and giving the Cutters a commanding 18-0 lead.
Luta, in juet her second season, is pushing her case to be a regular member of the Cutters’ best 17 in 2023 according to her coach.
“Last year she was sort of on the edge of the squad,” Peters said.
“This year she is really putting her hand up to be a major contributor in the 17 each week.”
The Seagulls tried to rally in the second half, but it was too little, too late.
The Cutters maintained their momentum and continued to dominate the field, showcasing their strength and talent.
The Cutters were beaming with confidence and showed no signs of a premiership hangover, as they took the field in their fresh colours.
The Cutters women had not only won their first game, but they had done it with style and finesse in an all-round team performance.
It is hoped that they will only get better across the next six rounds.
The Cutters will now turn their attention to their next game, where they will face the Tweed Seagulls at home for this first time this year.
