A worker has tragically died on a mine site to Mackay’s west after suffering a medical episode.

The contractor was on a meal break at the Hail Creek open cut mine when he collapsed on Friday.

He had been performing maintenance duties at the mine’s coal handling and preparation plant on Friday.

Paramedics tended to the man, but he died onsite.

A Glencore spokesman said the mine site was offering support to the man’s family.

The mine site is also offering counselling for work colleagues.

The death was just one day before an unrelated incident, where a mine worker was left in a serious condition in Coppabella.

The fitter was left with broken ribs and serious abdominal and lung injuries after he was caught between dual tyres and frame of a 15m haul truck when it moved without warning.

This incident took place at the Peabody Energy site on Thursday about 8.45am.
