Four injured in crash on Peak Downs Highway near Walkerston

Four patients, including two young boys, have been rushed to hospital following a crash in a Mackay suburb, at almost the same time paramedics responded to another crash in the Whitsundays.

Four people — including two children — have been hospitalised following a crash at an intersection with the Peak Downs Highway west of Mackay.

Three Queensland Ambulance Service vehicles, two fire trucks and multiple police cars rushed to the intersection of Greenmount Rd and the Peak Downs Highway in Walkerston just after 12.40pm to reports of a two vehicle crash.

The bystander who made one of the first triple-0 calls described hearing the sound of braking from their yard, followed by a loud crash.

They then made the triple-0 call before returning to the scene in time to witness a man and woman emerge from the dark grey LandCruiser Prado and run over to a badly damaged sedan.

The silver sedan sustained serious damage to its side, both passenger side doors crumpling inward.

Two crews from the Queensland Fire Department were on the scene by 12.45 and found one of the sedan’s passengers being assessed by paramedics and a pre-teen child still entrapped in the vehicle.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed three occupants of the sedan sustained injuries including a woman in her 20s with leg pain, a male child with back pain and a pre-teen male with leg, abdominal and back pain.

A path was cut to the entrapped pre-teen male using hydraulic cutting equipment so paramedics could treat them within the car.

A male patient in his 30s — believed to be an occupant of the Prado — also sustained injuries in the crash and was assessed for back and hip pain.

All four patients were transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

At almost the same time in the Whitsundays emergency services responded to a motorcycle on Casswell Rd near Proserpine.

After receiving reports of a motorcycle crashing into a fence, paramedics rushed to the scene and treated a pre-teen female who sustained lacerations to her leg, neck, shoulder and arm in the incident.

She was transported in a stable condition to Proserpine Hospital.
