New “world-class” tourist accommodation could be coming to a rainforest town to provide “ready access” to Barramundi fishing, downhill bike trails, and national parks.

Fishing Pty Ltd via Brisbane-based Planz Town Planning has lodged plans to build the “Outdoor Tourism Hub”, a two-storey, 12 room accommodation on a vacant 2370 sqm block at Finch Hatton west of Mackay.

“(It) will be used by local (tour) guides and operators from across the country,” documents submitted to Mackay Regional Council state.

“The central location of the site within the heart of the Pioneer Valley enables ready access to world-class fishing impoundments as well as the Crediton State Forest, Eungella National Park and the Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Park.”

The application could boost tourism in Finch Hatton and Eungella following the closure of the Finch Hatton Gorge Cabins and River Rock Cafe since Covid arrived, as well as Ulysses Garden Cafe along the road leading to the well-known waterfalls at Finch Hatton Gorge.

The hub includes seven double rooms for guests plus five single rooms for staff or guides, with 12 enclosed car park spaces plus three lounge areas, a kitchen and food preparation area and an indoor and outdoor dining area “including an expansive deck looking west into the heart of the Pioneer Valley”.

Documents state the design is sustainable and “authentic and sensitive” to the surroundings, using the “latest” in solar and battery technology.

The location at 18 Drew St is merely streets away from the bike park’s pump track, with the first trails for the park due to be completed by the end of 2023.

“With the limited transport options available for guests to travel to Finch Hatton, visitors will be encouraged to travel to the site in small groups in private vehicles and transfer services for Mackay,” documents state.

“The proposed development does not propose to use heavy vehicles or coaches.”

If approved, the hub is subject to $129,542.40 in infrastructure charges.
