Fears that an unmanned car had been spotted floating in the ocean near Slade Point turned to relief after it was revealed it was a jetski — and no one was missing.
Three police vehicles responded to reports a vehicle had gone into the ocean near Slade Point at 8:30am on Wednesday, including ‘flashing lights’ reportedly coming from the vehicle.
With the vessel sitting just above the waterline in Slade Bay, some bystanders reported the lights to police as distress signals.
However, just after 9:40am, a car pulled up to the boat ramp at Swan Street park with a woman getting out and exclaiming “I’ve lost my ski”.
Smiling, the woman then proceeded to speak with the attending officers and by 10:00am, all police had cleared the scene.
What QPS spokesmen had only been able to describe as a potentially “unmanned watercraft”, ended up being a jetski belonging to two Mackay residents.
The woman and her partner then donned wetsuits and went to recover their stray jetski, using their other jetski.
