Whitsunday Anglican School sent off its 2022 graduating class with an honour guard formed by hundreds of students.
School captain Medha Dammalapati was one of 56 graduates who had been at the school since their very first day of school.
“It’s like all your friends and everyone you’ve grown up with in the same place at the same time to celebrate us leaving,” she said.
“Just knowing that tomorrow you’re not going to wake up and come to school.
“It’s extremely bittersweet.”
As for the future, she intends to apply to study medicine at James Cook University.
Medha and her cohort high-fived and hugged their way down the honour guard with students, teachers, and family members.
They gathered at the end and tossed their hats in the air, before many departed to Mackay Harbour for a celebratory traditional swim.
Principal Andrew Wheaton said the honour guard was a school tradition capping off a year that started entirely online due to Covid-19 restrictions.
“It’s one where all of our students an say goodbye to our year 12s”, he said.
“It really speaks to that connection across our high school from kindergarten through to year 12.
“They're able to graduate into bright futures and take their place as future leaders in the world.”
