One of Mackay’s Olympic-size outdoor pools has received a major upgrade giving it a new lease of life in time for summer.
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said the $160,000 works at Mirani Swim Centre fixed issues identified from community feedback and during routine inspections.
“Works (include) tiling around (the) pool shell top, concrete slab replacements around the main pool and children’s pool, changes to the chair hoister, (a) bathroom renovation and earthing run around the pool and equipment,” Mackay Regional Council documents state.
Cr Williamson said the pool and adjacent caravan park was essential to the community.
“They serve a unique and important role by providing a direct service to locals wanting to swim in a 50m Olympic outdoor pool while also serving as an excellent location for seasonal workers and tourists to base their experiences out of the Mackay region,” he said.
The pool ranked third place as the region’s most visited last year pulling in about 5850 visitors over the peak month of November compared to 7472 for the Mackay Aquatic Recreation Centre and 6540 at Sarina.
“The work that has been completed as part of the annual maintenance program will extend the life of the various assets at the pool differently.
“Roofing works will extend the asset life by roughly 15 years.
“Pool tile work on the other hand will not extend asset life, but it has renewed the surface and improved the aesthetics of the facility.”
Cr Williamson said the council was also completing similar works at the Memorial Swim Centre.
“Memorial Swim Centre is heritage-listed and a Conservation Management Plan is being developed to guide the ongoing maintenance and renewals at the facility.”
