Full breakdown: Worst hit Covid suburbs across Mackay, Isaac Whitsunday region

The Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region has not escaped the wrath of the recent Covid outbreak spread across the state. See how your suburb has been affected.

The Mackay and Whitsunday regions recorded a massive spike in cases over the past week, as it began to feel the impact of Queensland’s third Covid wave.

Over the seven day period starting July 12 and ending July 19 and in areas where suburb data is available the worst-hit were Andergrove-Beaconsfield with 32 cases, Mount Pleasant-Glenella with 19 and Eimeo-Rural View had 17.

Shoal Point-Bucasia had 11 cases, Airlie Beach-Whitsundays had 10, and Bowen and Slade Point had nine each.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Eungella-Hinterland recorded zero cases, Mackay Harbour had one, and Proserpine and East Mackay had three each.

While these figures do not paint the full picture of the region’s current case numbers, they do provide an insight into where the bulk of the cases are concentrated.

For example in the Mackay region, the Northern Beaches appears to be where much of the recent outbreak has impacted, while the Mackay CBD has recorded a minor impact at this stage.

The number of total cases rose by a staggering 1648 in the Mackay local government area, and 550 in the Whitsunday LGA over the week ending July 18.

The Isaac LGA reported a further 128 cases.

It comes amid Queensland’s worst Covid outbreak since the start of the pandemic.

However the health data suggests the peak is still weeks away, with officials warning the number of hospitalisations could exceed 1000.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk last week requested Prime Minister Anthony Albanese call a national cabinet meeting to discuss a response.

The cabinet met on Monday, where it was agreed pandemic leave payments would return.

The state’s overwhelmed medical industry has urged Queenslanders to work from home where possible to help the system cope without safety mandates.

Mackay Base Hospital have had to reiterate the emergency department protocols after an influx of critically-ill people amid a surge in Covid-19 patients.

“We’re asking anyone who presents to emergency to be patient if they need to wait for care,” Mackay Base Hospital acting emergency department clinical director Dr Pushpa Nettle.

The Mackay LGA Covid case total now sits at 12,566 while the Whitsundays has recorded 3110 and Isaac 1048.

The Mackay health service region has had 32 Covid deaths since the start of the pandemic.
