Dr Karl’s upcoming trip to Mackay has been cancelled as the Australian science guru is stuck Sydney’s Covid-19 lockdown.
Dr Karl is the second big name who has been forced to pull out of trips up north with Shannon Noll cancelling his performance at the G&S Engineering Wine and Food Day on Monday.
Dr Karl Kruszelnicki was heading to the region for two shows at the MECC Extreme Moments of Science with Dr Karl and Dr Karl for Kids at the end of the July.
The visit was part of Queensland Museums Unearthed! tour which was stopping in Mackay to talk all things dinosaurs, megafauna and sea monsters.
Queensland Museum spokeswoman Christine Robertson said while Dr Karl would be missed, the community free event on Sunday would still be jam packed.
Mrs Robertson said there would be 17 areas for adults and children to explore, including opportunities to “pat virtual dinosaurs”, create artworks through eye motion, and watch a circus show about mathematics.
Talks will also be scheduled throughout the day including Life as a Drone Pilot and Life as a Geologist.
Palaeontologist Dr Scott Hocknull will also be presenting on something close to Mackay’s home.
Mrs Robertson said Dr Hocknull regularly worked on the South Walker Creek site in Nebo where a new megafauna bone was found 12 years ago.
“He’ll be talking about dinosaurs and a lot about megafauna, super-sized marsupials,” Mrs Robertson said.
