A local business power couple have decided to share the joy for the first birthday of their daughter, and are inviting the community to come along for a meal to celebrate on Wednesday night.

Kush Hariya and Dhwani Visariya are the owners of Friendly Grocer Mackay, previously the Palm Grove Store and Kookaburra Store on the corner of Slade Point Rd and Pheasant St.

Now with their first child Zoe turning one on September 4, they are celebrating a year of growth for both their business and their young family.

An open invitation on Facebook for a “Free Kids Meal Distribution” event open to kids under eight years old, who come with an adult.

Mr Hariya said the event starts at the exact time of Zoe’s birth, 5.06pm, and will run until 7pm or until the food runs out.

“We thought why don’t we celebrate it with the community?

“To be honest we had not pre-planned everything. We discussed it yesterday evening and said let’s do it.

“So we’re giving away chips, chicken nuggets, and muffins.”

He said people in Slade Point had welcomed the business since opening, and the birthday party allowed him to give back.

“My wife was pregnant when we opened up the shop (and now) the shop is doing well, I’m loving the support we are getting from the community here.

“We had our parents’ support initially when we had Zoe, but it was difficult managing home and work together.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without such a good team of people working for me … I’m very lucky to have them.

“Just a big thank you to the community for supporting us til now.”
