Emmett Withers nervously laughs when he admits he hasn’t got his driver’s licence yet.
Instead, he has achieved the title of Mackay’s Young Citizen of the Year and his ambition is to “conquer the animal kingdom”.
Given how much he has already accomplished in his 17 years, there is little that will stop Emmett from doing just that.
The Whitsunday Anglican College Year 12 student began advocating for animals when he was just five years old.
The hobby became his passion and grew into Emmett 4 Animals which he heads up but says would not be possible without community support.
“I wouldn’t be in this position without people who have supported me,” he said.

“The support I’ve received is unbelievable and without that support, I don’t think I would be where I am with the charity and the people I get to work with.”
Entering his final year of school, Emmett said he was eyeing a future in law so he could grow Emmett 4 Animals.
“I’d love to pursue my charity more, to be able to reach further into Queensland and be able to pursue it as something that helps even more and not necessarily animals but into other faculties (such as) environmental and people with disabilities,” he said.
“But first, I would really like to be able to conquer the animal kingdom.
“There are so many things I would love to be able to do and take my charity even further.
“I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.”
