Mackay is set to welcome different cargo to its shores with the port’s newest wharf ready for operation.

The works on Wharf One at the Port of Mackay have been completed, with $2.4 million sunk into the project to increase the capacity of the docking station.

Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert said investment in projects such as the Mackay port was a part of Queensland’s Covid-19 economic recovery plan.

“Quite simply, building a bigger wharf means Mackay can attract different cargo,” Mrs Gilbert said.

“The work that has been delivered since late last year has also supported 30 jobs and benefited businesses in our region.”

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation CEO Nicolas Fertin said the project’s completion was another step towards diverse trade opportunities.

“This positions the Port of Mackay to be able to take advantage of new and varied trade opportunities such as rail, pipeline or renewables projects,” he said.

Davbridge Constructions project manager Adam Preston said the project would act as a gateway for trade diversification.

“The wharf extension project highlights Davbridge Constructions’ expertise in marine construction, while using experienced and dedicated local contractors and suppliers,” Mr Preston said.

“We were proud to support 30 local jobs from around 15 local businesses in a boost for the region’s economy during the project.”

The upgrade to the port will be followed by an $8.5 million development for a tug berth facility.

The upgrade will include berths for two tugs and will be able to accommodate bigger and more powerful tugs in the area.
