MACKAY students have painted a mural depicting our region’s diversity from coal mining in the west to the coral reef in the east.
Carlisle Adventist Christian College Year 10 student Chetonia Tagaloa said the art class project took a team of about 25 students more than a month to complete.

Art teacher Dianne Gauci said the vision for the mural came from principal Andrew North.
“The children had to source the pictures and think about what represented Mackay,” Ms Gauci said.
Students chose to include a sugar mill, coal mining, local islands and marine life, the lighthouse at the Mackay Harbour, the Botanical Gardens and the South Sea islander Hut.

“(Each) represent pivotal aspects of the students’ lives while at Carlisle,” Ms Gauci said.
And there are definitely more art projects to come, she said.
“Everything is a blank canvas in the school.”
