Cape Hillsborough bushwalker found after using phone to signal rescue crew

A lost bushwalker relied on her use of a mobile phone to alert rescue crews to her location.

Quick thinking and smart use of technology played a critical part in a helicopter rescue north of Mackay.

A 57-year-old woman was reported missing when she did not return from a walk at Cape Hillsborough.

The woman’s husband called police, which called in the services of RACQ CQ Rescue about 6pm.

The rescue chopper performed an extensive land and coastal search of the area for the missing woman.

After nearly two hours of low-level flying to scour the national park’s dense bushland, rocky hills and beaches, the crew spotted the walker in the dark.

She was using her mobile phone’s flashlight to draw the rescue crew’s attention to her location.

A crewman was winched down to the beach to secure the uninjured walker, who was then reunited with her distressed husband.
