More than 1300 Mackay children will benefit from free or cheaper kindy in 2023 under a $1 billion investment.
The state government’s kindergarten program funding overhaul will mean 1329 children get reduced price kindy, with 332 of those getting it free.
Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert said the government’s $1bn investment targeted low and middle income families, making kindy free for vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
“It’s great to announce this investment, ensuring kindy is more affordable and accessible for every child, no matter their family’s circumstances,” she said.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the government was increasing its annual investment in kindy from $130m to $211m per year, or more than a billion dollars into services over the next five years.
She said participation in kindergarten had gone from 29 per cent in 2008 to 96 per cent.
“Kindy counts,” she said.
“I want kindy in Queensland to not only be world class, but accessible and affordable too.
“The cost of kindy is a huge barrier for many children and a great burden for thousands of working families across the state.
The program will include free kindy access for 14,000 children a year and reduced fees for 26,000 children.
