The anger over miners using Mackay region streets as their car park while they are at work could soon be over with plans approved for a new service station with secure parking for 1000 cars.
Paul and Leanne Fordyce, under Eton Transit Pty Ltd, first submitted plans to build Eton Transit Centre back in 2015.
Mackay Regional Council has now given the green light for the major project to go ahead.
The transit centre will be located along the Peak Downs Hwy at the intersection of Eton Homebush Rd.
Plans detail a main roadhouse connected to a bus station complete with truck and car fuel bowsers.
Behind the service station is a short-term car park for up to 35 trucks, with a turnaround that has a 35m radius.
Then, there is a new access road which on the left leads to a 15.3ha secure car park for up to 1000 cars.
To the right of the access road, there is a medium- and long-term truck parking as well as a spot for truck wash and repairs.
The transit centre will alleviate the frustration of Eton locals whose access to shops had been obstructed by miners who had parked their cars near the corner store and the school to keep their vehicles safe while they were away at the mines.
Original plans for the centre had included a “roundabout with a minimum 25m radius central island at the Peak Downs Hwy/Eton Homebush Rd intersection” but this was changed to a T-intersection.
To comply with approval conditions, the Fordyces must ensure the building design “complements the surrounding rural setting” and do landscaping “to soften the visual impacts”.
