One of Mackay’s most popular restaurants has just been approved for a major expansion on Victoria St, with a new layout for Korean BBQ, live bands, and an extra 70 people.

A popular Mackay restaurant has approval for a major expansion that will introduce a live music area and allow for up to 70 more diners.

Bing’s Nomiya will grow next-door into the former Victoria Street Market tenancy and reclaim part of its car park for an outdoor restaurant extension and multipurpose deck area.

Plans show the outdoor extension will have eight tables with in-built tabletop barbecues for patrons to cook under a temporary “tent style” roof cover.

“The extension has been designed with a ‘Korean style BBQ’ in mind,” documents state.

“Each table contains its own cooking facilities where guests will BBQ their choice of meats and vegetables.”

The BBQs will be available just two days a week, with a Friday 3pm set up to be pulled down at 3pm Sunday.

The plans were submitted to Mackay Regional Council in December 2022 and were approved with amendments in late April.

One major change is that the carpark extension has shifted from the west side, next to Battery World, to the east, next to Bing’s Nomiya associated bubble tea shop, Bing Cha.

Documents state the current restaurant has a food licence for 37 people, yet the car park extension and former Victoria Street Market will add 71 seats.

With the extra area, the restaurant will be able to seat triple the number of customers on weekends.

The 15 current car spots will be reduced to 10, including one accessible car park.

A major driver behind the expansion plan, particularly the live music deck, is to accommodate future special events hosted by Bing’s.

Initial documents state there are plans for events on “significant calendar dates such as Chinese New Year, New Year’s Eve, and night markets”.

“These events would also use the existing carpark area and could include such things like live music, sport event screenings and food/market stalls.”

There is an ongoing application to expand the food preparation approval sto allow Bing’s Nomiya to take over the entire enclosed area of the car park to host events with 200 to 300 guests.
