Police say “driver error” may have played a role in a horror fatal truck rollover on the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Rockhampton on Monday morning.
Crews were called to the scene along the Bruce Highway between Clairview and St Lawrence just after 11.40am.
A Queensland Ambulance Services spokesman said three ambulance crews attended the scene and had assessed the driver for critical injuries.
The Queensland Police Service has since stated a 40-year-old Andergrove man died at the scene.
“Initial investigations indicate at approximately 11.40am, a truck was travelling south along the Bruce Highway when it left the road and rolled,” the police statement said.
Mackay Police District Office Inspector Glenn Cameron said on Tuesday crash investigators had not reached a conclusion, but early signs showed the truck driver could be at fault.
“It’s very early in the investigation,” Inspector Cameron said.
“But it is a single vehicle crash.
“And at this stage there is an indication it could be attributed to driver error.”
The truck came to rest on its side in the crash, just metres from a railway track.
Timber and other debris were strewn at least 10m away from the truck.
The RACQ CapRescue helicopter was sent to the incident, and the Forensic Crash Unit also attended.
The QPS stated investigations were continuing.
The highway had been closed in both directions with laser bucket operator Tom Farris was caught in the line-up for over an hour.
The St Lawrence resident said there were often crashes along that stretch of the Bruce Highway, particularly near the Colonial Dr intersection north of the crash.
“Why, I don’t know”, Mr Farris said.
“It is such a wide intersection (and) there’s room for everybody to turn.”
The 55-year-old Rural View man passed away in Rockhampton Hospital after the 6.57am crash at the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Wumalgi Rd.
The truck crashed into a tree and rolled onto its side.
