Bruce Highway closed after truck carrying hay caught fire

The Bruce Highway south of Mackay is closed in both directions after a semi-trailer carrying hay caught fire.

A police spokeswoman said at this stage it was unknown what caused the fire.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said fire crews with help from council workers are in the process of removing the hay from the truck and extinguishing it.

The semi-trailer was in the northbound lane of the Bruce Highway when it caught fire about 2.45pm at Chelona.

A police spokeswoman said the smoke was initially so bad the south bound lane of the highway was also closed.

The highway is expected to be closed in both directions for some time.

While emergency crews were responding to this truck fire there was a car and truck collision on the Bruce Highway about 4km south.

No one was injured and the car was able to be driven from the scene however the truck ended up in a ditch.
