Family's fear after car torched near home

A Blacks Beach family woke to a shocking sight as a car exploded in flames barely 30 metres from their home.

Bec Warren said she woke to the sound of a car alarm screaming in the early hours of Saturday, less than 48 hours after two vehicles were left torched on the Bruce Highway.

“It wasn’t stopping … then I started hearing banging,” she said.

It was about 4.30am when the 28-year-old mum woke her partner Roland Mooney with the pair initially thinking someone had been trying to break into house to steal their car.

“I opened the back screen door, all I could see was flames … and all I could hear was banging, like explosions,” she said.

Someone had set a stolen car on fire less than 30 metres from their backyard on the other side of a small hill.

“It was very scary to wake up to … we have a one year old,” Ms Warren said.

“Our main concern was that the fire was going to spread to our house … it was spreading pretty quick.”

The couple had a friend staying with them who called emergency services. “I was freaking out,” Ms Warren said.

Mr Mooney, 24, said he was in the backyard holding the garden hose ready to defend his home if the fire moved closer as they waited for Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews to arrive.

“We heard about five loud explosions,” he said.

“I’m out there with the garden hose thinking what the hell’s going on.”

Shrubs near where the car was set alight caught fire, he said.

“That started to spread pretty quickly,” he added.

“We couldn’t see the car, but we could see the flames coming over the hill and the trees.

“I’m just happy no one was injured.”

Ms Warren said the fireys were on scene within five or so minutes of their call and the flames were doused in about 15 minutes.

A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed the Toyota Kluger had been stolen from a North Mackay home, near the Gooseponds, sometime after midnight Saturday.

It was set alight in an area off Chenoweth Drive at Blacks Beach. Police investigations into the incident continue.

On Thursday emergency crews had to douse two vehicles set alight within 30km of each other along the Bruce Highway.

Crews were called to the first car near Lethebrook shortly before 2pm, and the second near the BP at Bloomsbury at 2.45pm. One of the vehicles had been stolen from North Mackay.

This also come barely two weeks after a serial youth offender was flown to Brisbane with serious burns to a large portion of his body including his legs and hands after allegedly setting a stolen car on fire.

A red Holden Colorado was stolen from a Rural View home between 11pm August 28 and early hours August 29.

Police were called to the torched vehicle at the intersection of Hume St and Cemetery Rd about 11.20am August 29, while paramedics were called to a treat a teen boy with burns.

Ms Warren said she held fears now this has happened once near her home it might happen again.

“We’ve got a young child, her safety is our main concern,” she said.
