A man allegedly tried to throw a bicycle at a police horse before grabbing a police officer’s gun as he was being taken down and arrested during a dramatic incident on Brisbane’s Story Bridge on Friday night.
Rothwell resident Jubin Ghanei-Khorasaniha faced Brisbane Arrests Court on Saturday charged with five offences, including serious assault, and assaulting police.
Officers were called to the Story Bridge just after 11pm over reports a man was spitting on people. The police service’s mounted unit was among those who responded.
Police will allege Mr Ghanei-Khorasaniha tried to throw a bicycle at one of the police horses when he was confronted. Officers then arrested him.
“When police approached the defendant in an attempt to transition the defendant to the ground and place him under arrest and prevent further offences, police felt the defendant grab at the police officer’s service-issue firearm,” police prosecutor Qi Wang told the court.
“The police officer could feel the defendant with a grip on his service-issued firearm, and looked down to observe the defendant with one of his hands attached to the handle of the firearm … appearing to be pulling the firearm out of the holster.”
Legal Aid lawyer Ann-Maree Russo said Mr Ghanei-Khorasaniha has pre-existing mental health issues, but had recently disengaged from mental health support services.
Ms Russo made a bail application on behalf of Mr Ghanei-Khorasaniha – who lives with his parents at Rothwell, north of Brisbane.
His family wanted him released into their care and Ms Russo said he is in the process of re-engaging with mental health services.
“He has struggled with the medication regime because he feels it makes him put on weight and there are other issues with regards to that that need to be carefully managed moving forward for his future,” Ms Russo told the court.
Magistrate Michael Quinn noted Mr Ghanei-Khorasaniha’s “significant mental health issues” in making his decision regarding bail.
“The charges are serious and show that your mental health is deteriorating significantly,” he said.
“There needs to be considerable concern about the safety of members of the community as far as you are concerned, and also your own safety.
“It is a very serious charge of you making a most determined effort – in the midst of very serious erratic behaviour, threats and attacks on police and police horses – in the middle of a main thoroughfare on the Story Bridge.”
Magistrate Quinn refused bail, saying no conditions could alleviate the potential risk Mr Ghanei-Khorasaniha and his mental health issues posed to the general public.
Mr Ghanei-Khorasaniha’s case will return to the Brisbane Arrests Court on May 31 and will be heard alongside his other outstanding charges.
