Jason Momoa happy to hit the Gold Coast for Aquaman premiere

It’s hard to blend in with the crowd when you’re 193cm tall and have an appearance on Game of Thrones under your belt. But Aquaman star Jason Momoa says it wasn’t until he spent four months living in Queensland that he started to lose his anonymity.

IT was during the months he spent living in Queensland that Jason Momoa realised he was no longer able to walk through the streets without being recognised.

The 39-year-old spent more than four months on the Gold Coast last year, playing the titular character in the $220 million DC blockbuster Aquaman, which opens in cinemas today.

While he had long enjoyed a loyal fan base, he told The Courier-Mail he had been used to a certain level of anonymity.

But his hulking 193cm frame was easy to spot as he immersed himself in the Queensland lifestyle; swimming, surfing, rock climbing and hitting local gyms.

“I’ve had the luck of not being very big yet so people kind of just let me (do my thing),” he said. “I could just go to these different places and just blend in, but now it’s getting a little bit harder.”

While his appearance as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones in 2011-12 marked a turning point, it was being cast as the half-human, half-Atlantian Arthur Curry, AKA Aquaman, in the comic book film franchise and his first appearance in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that cemented his Hollywood status.

“It’s fun when it’s fans (spotting you) because you can be nice to them and kind of hang out,” he said. “I respect it because there are things that I geek out on … when I’ve met musicians and bands I get pretty giggly and stupid.”

Momoa, who was born in Hawaii and raised in rural Iowa, has always had an affinity for Australia, having spent a number of years living here before meeting wife Lisa Bonet.

“I’ve been from Adelaide up to Ayers Rock and Alice Springs and Coober Pedy and Coffs Harbour and I’ve been to Perth – I’ve travelled so much around Australia,” he said.

“I love it, I’ve had a phenomenal time.”

Momoa said he was keen to shoot a sequel to Aquaman and believes Queensland would again be the obvious choice of location.

“It’s not up to me but I think absolutely (we would shoot again on the Gold Coast),” he said.

“I don’t see why … we wouldn’t.”
