Spectators in an Ipswich courtroom were left in a stunned silence on Thursday as a man tried to flee and was tackled by a police prosecutor.
Christopher Mark Lobegeiger, 31, surrendered himself to the Ipswich Magistrates’ Court after allegedly failing to appear two days earlier.
The court heard a warrant had been put out for his arrest.
Mr Lobegeiger was directed to wait in the dock as duty lawyer Matthew Fairclough explained he had been told the Millmerran man went to the wrong courthouse on November 22.
He was expected to appear in Ipswich on charges including dangerous operation of a vehicle, assault occasioning bodily harm and evading police, but allegedly turned up at the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court.
After briefly mouthing words through the glass to a friend who had joined him in the courtroom, Mr Lobegeiger made a break towards the exit.
He was promptly tackled by police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick.
“You are a fool, an absolute fool,” Magistrate Dennis Kinsella thundered as Mr Lobegeiger was dragged back to the dock.
He hung his head in his hands and replied: “I don’t know … I had a mental blank.”
Less than five minutes later he was hauled from the court by two police officers.
Mr Lobegeiger will return to court at a later date.
