Broncos' Ipswich half thanks Alfie - September 30

ALLAN Langer has been inspiring Ipswich's finest for decades.

So it was no surprise that Broncos five-eighth Anthony Milford credited Langer with helping him unleash his best in his first season at the Brisbane Broncos.

Milford, 21, attended St Peter Claver College in Ipswich as a youth and lined up in the NRL grand final for the Broncos against the Cowboys.

He told the QT of the influence Langer, a Broncos assistant coach, has had on him.

"Alfie is big for me," Milford said.

"He watches our game inside and out and in the big games he has been a massive influence on both myself and Benny (Hunt).

"Alfie tells us to get on the ball and not waste any opportunities on the field.

"We take all the pointers that we can from him.

"He doesn't get enough of a wrap."

Jets do their city proud - September 28

THE Ipswich Jets attained their Holy Grail after a 33-year wait.

In one of the bravest displays ever seen on a rugby league field the Jets defeated the Townsville Blackhawks 32-20 in the Intrust Super Cup grand final to win their first ever premiership.

For the entire second half the Jets were down to just 15 men with Kurt Capewell (ankle) and Josh Seage (concussion) out of the game.

The players, to a man, dug into the deep well of courage and desire that permeates this Ipswich team to find a way to prevail.

The genius of Marmin Barba, Nemani Valekapa and Carlin Anderson came to the fore on the biggest stage.

The massive hits of man of the match Billy McConnachie shook Suncorp Stadium to its foundations while captain Keiron Lander led his side like Braveheart.

This was a victory for the ages.

In their fifth trip to a grand final since being founded in 1982 the Jets did themselves, their club and their city proud.

$370m plan for base - September 23

AMBERLEY is set to be home to 10 C-27J Spartan battlefield airlifter aircraft, with the announcement of a $370.4 million project at the RAAF base.

The first of the aircraft arrived at RAAF Base Richmond in June and construction works were expected to start early 2016.

The facilities for RAAF Base Amberley to support the new aircraft are expected to be completed by mid-2018.

The project will include constructing training areas, flight simulator, an aircraft parking tarmac, meteorology observation room, fire station and storage.

It will also include road extensions, demolition work and relocating heritage buildings.

The aircraft will be operated by No 35 Squadron and serve as the airlift link between Army's rotary-wing fleet and Air Force's larger transport aircraft.

Grand Theft Auto comes to Ipswich - September 19

IT SOUNDED like something

straight out of Grand Theft Auto.

High on ice, a group of dim-witted crooks stole one car, smashed into a few bystanders, before fleeing and hopping into another stolen car.

There was chaos outside the Racehorse Hotel as the thieves side-swiped several cars, also hitting a motorcyclist, seriously injuring them.

They then ran into the turf club, where they stole a Nissan Navara ute from the track manager, driving the wrong way up Wickham St, next to Bundamba State School.

Two Ipswich teenagers were arrested following a dramatic chase through Brisbane and Logan later the same day.

Traffic on Warwick Rd was thrown into chaos when a crazed driver smashed into at least 10 vehicles, before stopping outside a school and allegedly trying to hijack another car.

Witnesses said the incidents took place along a 3km stretch of Warwick Rd, from the intersection with Moffatt St, about 8.45am.

Ipswich mum Julie Soares was on her way to pick up her daughter from camp when she saw the start of the incident.

Ms Soares said about six cars were damaged at the intersection.

The carnage continued on Warwick Rd as the vehicle hit more vehicles before stopping in front of a school in Churchill.

The driver then allegedly attempted to steal another vehicle.

Members of the public tackled the man to the ground and restrained him before police arrived and took him into custody.

A Churchill resident, who wished not to be named, witnessed the arrest as it unfolded outside his house.

"I heard a loud 'bang' and went outside to see what had happened," he said.

The 37-year-old described the scene as "crazy".

The driver's vehicle was believed to have collided with about 10 cars during the incidents.

Two people were taken to hospital.

A 52-year-old man was arrested in connection with the series of incidents and charged with offences including dangerous operation.
