An Ipswich school could benefit from a $7000 makeover to ‘green up’ its grounds and solve water conservation issues as drought persists across South East Queensland.
Water distributor-retailer Urban Utilities is calling on schools in the Brisbane, Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley and Somerset regions to apply for its water-savvy greening grant project.
Urban Utilities education officer Victoria Zdraveski said applicant schools must form an idea for a new waterwise green space and explain how it will conserve water.
“The successful school will receive $7000 to complete a project to transform their grounds from thirsty to thriving, all while being waterwise,” she said.
“The project could provide shade trees, corridor planting around ovals, vegetable gardens, pollinator pathways – the possibilities are endless.”
Together with Bulimba Creek Catchment Co-ordinating Committee, Urban Utilities will support the winning school in its pursuit of greener grounds.
“Our friends at (Bulimba Creek Catchment Co-ordinating Committee) will help manage the project and will make sure water saving is incorporated in everything from designs and plant species to the materials used,” Ms Zdraveski said.
“We can’t wait to see what fantastic ideas our schools come up with.”
Schools must submit their grant applications by November 5, with the recipient to be announced on November 12 and the project to be completed over the summer school holidays.
