USQ student Liam Daniel Young refused bail for multiple alleged crimes

A uni student who allegedly hid from police in bushland for three days will remain in custody after he was denied bail by an Ipswich court.

Queensland Police Commissioner's message to victims of crime

An Ipswich university student, who allegedly hid from police in bushland for days, was left stunned yesterday after his application for bail was refused by an magistrate.

“Oh my god. Your honour … I have exams for university in the next few weeks,” student Liam Daniel Young said, as he interrupted proceedings in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 26.

Mr Young faces a range of charges spanning from 2018, including for the alleged serious assault of a police officer, obstructing police, drug and utensil possession, entering a dwelling with intent to commit an indictable offence, and failing to appear in court.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Nanette Green said Mr Young’s bail application should have be denied because he failed to appear on multiple occasions and hid from police in bushland for days.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella agreed with police that Mr Young, 30, was at risk of committing further offences and failing to appear which was exaggerated by his lack of accommodation if released.

“Given the lack of certainty of where he’s going I’m not inclined to grant (Mr Young) bail,” he said.

“While the offences themselves are not the most serious example, it is perhaps to compounding effect, or an accumulation of the offending which renders them more serious.

“It’s apparent from the record that he has absconded or rather removed himself from the court’s jurisdiction, so to speak, over some period of time before he was ultimately apprehended by the police.”

Lawyer Mathew Fairclough said the psychology student had issues with his mental health, and drug use.

“He has indicated a desire to me, to perhaps go to a rehabilitation centre – there are some underlying issues with cannabis,” he said.

Mr Young will remain in custody until his matter is mentioned again on May 17, although Mr Young hopes to submit another bail application before that time.

As for Mr Young’s exams, Magistrate Kinsella said there was not much he could do about them except to contact the University of Southern Queensland to see if they could be taken externally.
