A court has heard how a woman’s poor mental health led her to assault a police officer who was trying to arrest her roommate.
Police prosecution said the 30-year-old woman, Roxanne Kynaston, threw a rubber thong at an officer at a Raceview home on February 25 at 9.45pm.
“During this arrest the defendant has come to the door of the bedroom and has thrown a rubber thong at police which stuck… (a) constable in the arm,” he said.
“(And she) continued to yell at the police.”
The woman was arrested although Kynaston was taken to Ipswich Hospital for treatment and issued with a notice to appear.
The court heard police had attended the home for an unrelated incident at the time of the assault.
Solicitor Christy Louden said her client hadn’t been handling her mental health issues well and is on medication for her illnesses, although she did not read any specifics into the public record.
Ms Louden said it was a highly charged environment and circumstances and Kynaston intended to move from the house as the living environment was negatively affecting her mental health.
The court heard on Kynaston’s record was a recent assault against a police officer at a hospital.
Magistrate Grace Kahlert reiterated Kynaston’s behaviour was connected to her significant health struggles and said the court would afford the her one more chance at rehabilitation by not recording a conviction.
On Tuesday, April 19, Kahlert pleaded guilty to assault and was fined $400.
