BOMBER'S BLAST

WHILE our male cricketers have not been setting the field alight, you can not say that about our female team.

They have started their journey to the top of the T20 tree with three successive victories in Guyana, accounting for Pakistan and Ireland before defeating New Zealand.

Australia has qualified from their pool for the semi-finals.

November 25 is the final date.

The Aussie women will be looking to qualify and more than likely set up a clash with reigning champions, the West Indies, who have taken all before them in their pool.

Mighty Matildas

REVENGE is a dish served cold they say.

That saying rang true for the Australian Matildas after last Sunday suffering a football defeat by Chile, a country ranked No 37 in the world.

Rather then mope around and sulk, the girls put some hard work in on the training paddock and came out firing just two days later.

Newcastle was the venue and the crowd were in for a much improved effort from the footballers. They came out and tore Chile apart winning 5-0.

In recent times when the Matildas win, it is often due to the form of superstar Sam Kerr. But this time, another player stood tall in Caitlin Ford. She bagged a hat-trick.

Wrong message

WHILE it is great to see the Socceroos back in action at Suncorp Stadium I am not happy with the selection of the squad to play this friendly against South Korea.

The main concern for me is the selection of a player that has never set foot inside our great country and only recently received an Australian passport.

The player in question is Scottish-born Martin Boyle.

I fail to see how hungry a player is to represent a country they basically know nothing about.

We encourage pride in the jersey but selecting someone to represent us without even being to our country is sending the wrong message.

I would prefer to be selecting a young player like Thomas Deng whose appetite to listen and learn is a quality attribute.

Don't get me wrong though. I still will be cheering the Socceroos to victory.

Quick thoughts

HEROES of the week: All the winners in the City of Ipswich Sports Awards. Every nominee has done the city proud.

Villain of the week 1: The recent Golden Boot decision was met with amazement. Thomas Makinson might be a good player but best in the world - not for me.

Villian of the week 2: Formula One driver Max Verstappen should concentrate on driving and not trying to assault a fellow driver. Yes, the other driver may have been at fault but taking actions into your own hands is never going to end well.

Did you know? The fastest century scored in T20 competition is held by South African David Miller. It took him 35 deliveries.

Bomber's best: Not a good week with Melbourne and Adelaide both suffering defeats.

This week I move to the A-League where I see Brisbane Roar scoring their first victory of the season.
