New data released on Monday by Australia Post has revealeled Queensland is the worst state for dog attacks on posties.

The shocking data showed that more than 1420 dog safety incidents were recorded Australia-wide in the past six months, with 466 of those in Queensland.

The Ipswich suburb of Bundamba was the top suburb for incidents in the southeast, followed by Darra and Stafford in Brisbane.

Video released by Australia Post on Monday showed a number of incidents where posties were chased and bitten by dogs while on duty.

It said more than 55 posties were involved in dog-related incidents each week.

It pleased with owners to take responsibility for their dogs and warned that it was often the least likely suspects to show aggressive behaviour.

“While no single dog breed is more likely to attack than another, Australia Post is increasingly seeing it’s the smaller dogs that show aggressive behaviour,” a spokesperson said.

“Customers must understand that for many posties it can be stressful or triggering knowing that your delivery round may involve a dog that shows aggressive behaviour,’’ Australia Post General Manager of Safety and Wellbeing, Rod Maule, said.

“Our team members just want to be able to deliver for our customers without being attacked, harassed, or chased by dogs.

“Regardless of the breed or temperament of your dog, we implore owners to secure their dog safely in a back garden, on a leash, or in another room when expecting parcel deliveries or mail, whether or not you are at home.

“If you are unable to restrain your dog securely, we suggest using our parcel lockers where possible.”

He said posties would not make a delivery if it was unsafe and would stop deliveries to a customer’s home until the danger was fixed.

“Australia Post also reports dog-related incidents to relevant local councils to ensure enforcement is actioned,” he said.
