Police rush to alleged knife fight at Ipswich Catholic school

The principal of an Ipswich school has confirmed students and staff went into an emergency lockdown today after reports a knife was produced during a confrontation.

An Ipswich primary school has offered support to parents after police and paramedics were called to the facility this morning following an allegedly violent incident.

Police received initial reports of an incident involving a knife at Sacred Heart Primary School, Booval, about 10.45am.

Sacred Heart School principal Chris Thomas sent a statement to parents to say the entire school went into emergency lockdown.

“This lockdown occurred in response to a student wellbeing matter and was quickly enacted by staff at the school,” Mr Thomas said.

“Support was provided to ensure appropriate measures were taken to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of students.

“It has been determined that there is no further need for concern at the school as a result of this incident.”

Mr Thomas praised his teaching staff who responded to the situation to ensure, “all members of our school community remained safe”.

“This event may have caused distress for our students, and I would like to emphasise to students and families that if they require counselling support as a result, they are to make contact [ASAP]”.

The Queensland Times was contacted by someone close to the school who alleges a student threatened a teacher with a knife during the incident.

A police spokeswoman said at the time police were not in a position to confirm if a weapon was involved, but said there had been a “dispute” between two students.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics responded to the alleged assault and treated a boy for minor neck injuries.

They said injuries were not caused by a knife and the boy did not require hospital treatment.

The police spokeswoman said it was a minor incident and as of July 28, police were not carrying out further investigations.
