Police have responded in force to a church in the heart of the city this morning following what is understood to have been a hoax threat.

Three officers ran on foot from the watch house to nearby St Paul’s Anglican Church, quickly followed by three marked cars and two detectives.

Despite a heavy police presence at the church, a police spokesman said the threat — understood to have been made over the phone — was regarding another building on nearby South Street.

The spokesman said police received the threatening phone call just before 9am.

Police left the scene around 10.15am after completing a search.
