A young Ipswich man has been released on bail after allegedly stalking a woman from one side of town to the other, and back again, in the middle of the night.
Rosewood man Terrek Mackinaw, 20, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court from custody via video link on Thursday to apply for bail after being arrested on a number of charges including unlawful stalking.
His lawyer Mr Rose said the most recent charges before the court related to a single incident that took place in February, when Mackinaw allegedly followed a woman in his car “for some time”.
The court heard Mackinaw allegedly stalked a woman from her workplace at Raceview Tavern to somewhere near Colleges Crossing, only to turn around and follow her back to Raceview Tavern.
Mr Rose said he then tried to speak with the woman at the restaurant.
The defence lawyer argued the alleged behaviour was at the “lower end” of the scale, when compared with other stalking-type offences.
Mr Rose told the court Mackinaw was born in Canada and moved to Australia from Alberta seven years ago, when he was 13 years old.
The young man has been working as a steel fixer since he left school in Year 10 and is currently employed by his grandfather who owns Specialised Stainless Steel at Indooroopilly.
Magistrate Kathleen Payne said Mackinaw had an “appalling history for a very young man”.
The court heard he is currently on probation for other offences – an order that was imposed just last month, on November 16, for a period of two years.
Ms Payne said she had taken this factor into consideration and ultimately granted Mackinaw’s bail application, subject to him meeting certain conditions.
The matter will return to Ipswich Magistrates Court on February 4 next year.
“I would advise you to stay out of trouble until that day unless you want to go to jail,” Ms Payne told Mackinaw.
