The alleged murderers of eight-month old Dexter Wilton, who tragically died of starvation in Raceview three years ago, will remain in custody on remand as they await their hearing.

In June 2019, paramedics found eight-month-old Dexter Wilton dead in his Raceview home, allegedly from dehydration and malnutrition.

Dexter’s mother Natalie Jade Whitehead and her boyfriend at the time Andrew William Campbell were charged over his death months later, and the pair has since been remanded in custody.

An Ipswich court heard earlier this year the paramedics’ tragic discovery was prompted after the Department of Child Safety received a number of calls in regards to Dexter’s welfare.

It has since been alleged Ms Whitehead and Mr Campbell “forgot about him” while they were on a three-day drug binge.

Ms Whitehead stands charged with the murder, six counts of failing to supply the necessaries of life and misconduct with a corpse by interfering.

She is also charged with stealing and unlawfully possessing a category D, H or R weapon – both charges understood to be unrelated to the baby’s death.

Mr Campbell, 43 of Bellbowrie, also stands charged with murder, misconduct with a corpse by interfering, and three counts of failing to supply the necessities of life.

On December 14, 2022, the pair was scheduled for committal mention in Ipswich Magistrates court.

Defence lawyer John Wilson appeared as town agent for Hannay Lawyers on behalf of Mr Campbell.

He said the defence was ready to proceed to a committal hearing, in which a magistrate would hear evidence to determine whether the matter should proceed to trial.

Mr Wilson said the committal hearing was expected to take two days.

The court heard the Director of Public Prosecutions was still considering a memorandum for the case, and noted the defence were still in the process of obtaining an “expert medical report”.

Both Ms Whitehead and Mr Campbell’s matters were adjourned to January 20, 2022, for further committal mention, and the pair was further remanded in custody.
