An Ipswich grandmother who was found with three cannabis plants in her backyard told police she wanted to use the drugs to make butter, a court has heard.

Lisa Diane Buchholz, 41 from Redbank Plains, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Thursday, May 12, where she pleaded guilty to three charges including permitting use of place, possessing dangerous drugs, and possessing utensils or pipes for use.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Nanette Green told the court officers discovered three cannabis plants grown in pots – one 1m in height and two 30cm in height – at Buchholz’ address about 10.50am on March 25 this year.

Snr Cnst Green said Buchholz was home at the time and told police she intended to use the cannabis to make butter for her son, who suffers from leukaemia.

“Police located a bowl on the back patio area containing less than 1g of chopped cannabis,” she said.

“The bowl was located in open view of everyone. The defendant made no comments in relation to the cannabis.”

She said police also found a water pipe containing burnt cannabis and a bong which Buchholz said she had used to smoke the cannabis.

The court heard Buchholz had no criminal history.

Defence lawyer Christy Louden said her client was a forklift driver, warehouse worker, mother, and grandmother.

Magistrate Kathleen Payne said she was of the view Buchholz’ behaviour was “somewhat out of character” as she had no previous convictions against her name.

“You’re a mother, your son has leukaemia, and I understand that may be the reason for the plants in order to assist him. He’s not on chemo,” she said.

Buchholz was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond with an $800 recognisance.

No convictions were recorded.
