An Ipswich dad-of-five has been released on bail after allegedly failing to stop for police while under the influence of drugs.
Gailes man Jamain Clayton Brandrick, 26, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court via video-link on Wednesday, May 11 to make an application for bail.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Paul Caldwell told the court Brandrick was charged with failure to appear, stealing from Riverlink Woolworths, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, a syringe charge, and possess knife in a public place.
Another set of charges before the court on Wednesday included two counts of driving while unlicensed and one of failing to comply with a requirement to stop. The driving offences are alleged to have occurred in March this year.
Sgt Caldwell said about 10pm on March 26, police were conducting patrols along Brisbane Rd, Dinmore when they observed a Mitsubishi 380 travelling in the opposite direction.
“Police have observed the vehicle in the 7/11 fuel station situated off Brisbane Rd, Dinmore,” he said.
He said police identified Brandrick as the driver of the car and watched as he pumped fuel into the car and paid for items at the service station before running back to the car and taking off down Brisbane Rd.
Brandrick was allegedly not the holder of a driver’s licence at the time.
“Police then subsequently attempted to intercept the vehicle on Brisbane Rd and activated emergency lights and sirens on the police vehicle, indicating for the defendant to stop his motor vehicle,” Sgt Caldwell said.
“Police have observed the defendant accelerate away from police and proceed through an intersection controlled by traffic lights which were red at the time.”
He said police located Brandrick at his residence on Tuesday, May 10 and he confirmed he was the driver. Sgt Caldwell said he also told police he was under the influence of amphetamines when police tried to intercept him, so did not want to pull over.
The court heard Brandrick has five children, aged between six weeks and seven years old.
Magistrate Kathleen Payne noted that Brandrick’s application for bail was opposed by the prosecution as he had a history of failing to appear. She granted it, stating his detention was not justified “at this stage”.
His matter will return to Ipswich Magistrates Court on June 1 for mention.
