A self-styled Ipswich “eshay” with a history of tampering with other people’s vehicles has gotten his first taste of life behind bars after being charged with 12 offences.

Leichhardt man Jesse Charles Hallett, 19, pleaded guilty in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Thursday to all 12 offences.

They included five charges of failing to appear, two of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one each of possessing tainted property, wilful damage and obstructing police.

Hallett has been remanded in pre-sentence custody since August 23 when he was arrested on a warrant for failing to show for a court appearance.

The court heard the offending largely occurred between February and Hallett’s arrest.

It included two joy rides in company in stolen vehicles, one of which led police on a high-speed chase; possessing a cordless drill, chargers and batteries; scratching a window of a train; and providing his twin brother’s name to police.

The court heard Hallett was sentenced on June 25 last year to 15 months’ probation for breaking into six vehicles and stealing a variety of items including sunglasses and CDs.

He did not engage with the probation order, not did he perform any of the community service he was re-sentenced to.

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough told the court his client was “young and foolish” but instructed he had no problems with dangerous drugs.

Hallett worked as a fruitpicker in Leichhardt, the court heard.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess sentenced Hallett to eight months less one week of imprisonment, with immediate parole taking into account the 46 days he spent on remand.

Hallett describes himself as an “eshay” on his social media accounts and uploads rap videos to YouTube under the moniker ‘Sanaty from 43’.
