An Ipswich man has faced court after a woman’s home was allegedly broken into before she was allegedly injected with drugs and raped.

Shane Paul Brown, 41, was charged with 13 offences, including one count of rape, one count of producing dangerous drugs and four counts of possessing dangerous drugs.

He applied for bail on June 24 at the Ipswich Magistrates Court.

The court heard that Mr Brown broke into the home of the victim and then injected her with an unknown substance on January 20.

While she was under the influence of the substance, Mr Brown allegedly raped her.

The court heard that the victim was able to describe the scene to a certain degree of detail.

But the defendant denied her allegations and also made claims about why he was incapable of having sex with her, the court heard.

The court was also told that Mr Brown was suffering a fatal heart condition, causing him to possibly have a shorter lifespan.

Magistrate Robert Walker said the case will rely heavily on the victim’s statement and the forensic examination of the material obtained from the alleged crime scene.

“The description in the objection of a bail affidavit of the evidence (that) a complainant is able to give his detail notwithstanding what she says happened to her,” he said.

“I accept that the case against you will rely upon DNA evidence.

“At the movement, there are significant delays in processing DNA tests in the relevant laboratory in Queensland, and the delays can be in years based on current information.”

After considering the defendant’s history of failing to answer to bail and breaching court orders, Magistrate Walker refused his application.

“You have a history and it’s significant. It gives rise to risk,” he said.

“That refusal of bail would see you spending a greater period of pre-sentence custody than any actual prison is available to serve upon conviction.”

The case was adjourned to July 5 for committal mention and Mr Brown was remanded in custody.
