Ipswich teen Jorell Matthews fronts court over alleged servo assault, car theft

An Ipswich teen has faced court from behind bars on remand today, accused of a violent car theft at an Ipswich service station earlier this month.

An Ipswich man accused of assaulting a stranger and stealing her car earlier this month has been identified following his arrest.

Police will allege Ipswich resident, Jorell Arthur Francis Matthews, 19, assaulted a Collingwood Park woman and stole her car in Dinmore on Friday, May 5.

They will allege the assault occurred around 10.15pm, and that Mr Matthews approached the woman while she was walking towards her parked vehicle at a Brisbane Road service station.

The woman was taken to Ipswich Hospital with a head injury following the alleged assault.

Police later discovered her burnt out vehicle abandoned along the Warrego Highway at Marburg on May 9.

Mr Matthews was arrested by police at a Leichhardt address on Friday, May 19, and taken into custody.

He stands charged with robbery with actual violence, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving unlicensed, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and stealing.

He also stands charged with possessing dangerous drugs, failing to take reasonable care and precautions in respect of a needle or syringe, obstructing police, and fraud by dishonestly making off without paying.

Mr Matthews was represented in Ipswich Magistrates Court on May 22 by defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough.

Mr Matthews made no application for bail, and was remanded in custody for mention on June 16.
