An Ipswich man sentenced for 14 crimes including the assault of two Queensland Rail workers has been released from jail.

On Friday, March 18, Ngor Akech Akech-Kuir pleaded guilty to charges including common assault in public while drunk, assault occasioning bodily harm while drunk in public, public nuisance, fare evasion, and breaching bail.

The court heard during one incident Akech-Kuir had fallen asleep on a train and when a QLD rail worker tried to wake him so that he didn’t miss his stop, he began verbally abusing the worker – weeks later the behaviour escalated.

On September 7, 2021, police prosecutor senior constable Courtney Boss said a worker at Northgate Station heard a loud bang and when she went to investigate found Akech-Kuir with a woman lying on the ground with a cut to her head.

Akech-Kuir was drunk and abusive towards the worker and pushed her to the ground while she was trying to help the injured woman.

Senior constable Boss said two female workers and the injured woman took refuge in a nearby room and Akech-Kuir banged on the doors and windows while screaming, “you’re all dogs, you’re all c***ts,”.

Days later on two separate occasions, Akech-Kuir was abusive and caused a drunken scene while on a train.

During one incident police were called when Akech-Kuir refused to get off a train and violently grabbed another Queensland Rail worker who was trying to do her job.

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough said the 25-year-old tradesman had his alcoholism under control but went off the rails after his sister died.

Ipswich Magistrate Dennis Kinsella said Akech-Kuir’s were particularly serious as he assaulted people who were just trying to do their job and said he was the “scourge of Queensland Rail”.

The 126 days Akech-Kuir spent in jail was declared as time served and he was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with immediate parole.

Akech-Kuir will be under the supervision of parole and required to complete 120 hours of community service.
