An experienced council construction worker is recovering in hospital after his leg was crushed by an excavator while working on a small roadside project west of Brisbane at Karalee.

Ipswich City Council contracted GWT Earthmoving to carry out road works along Junction road north of Ipswich, which is where the incident occurred.

The project’s leading hand was the worker who was seriously injured.

The family-owned Ipswich earthmoving business was in the process of laying turf when the horrific incident occurred on Friday, November 4.

An Ipswich City Council spokeswoman said the safety and wellbeing of council employees and contractors was its first and foremost priority.

“We are doing all that we can to support our injured colleague and those who witnessed the incident and provided assistance,” she said.

“All team members were individually counselled and offered on site counselling, as well as provided contact details for council’s Employee Assistance Program.”

The spokeswoman said the council was caring out routine road maintenance such as drainage at the corner of Junction Rd and Elanora Way.

“Work was temporarily stopped on Friday and Monday … work has now resumed at the site.”

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the man in his 30s, was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition after his lower leg was seriously injured after a piece of heavy machinery reversed into him and over his leg.

The QAS spokeswoman said critical care paramedics started treating the worker on site before he was rushed to the hospital about 11.30pm.

A Workplace Health and Safety spokeswoman said inspectors continue to make inquiries into an incident.

“A man was injured by an excavator at Karalee on Friday – the works were being carried out by GWT Earthworks for the Ipswich City Council.

“No notices have been issued to either party at this stage.”

A Queensland Police spokesman said officers were called to the site and were assisting Workplace Health and Safety with their investigation.
