The enraged, heartbroken mother of a little boy preyed upon by his own step-father while she was out of the house has given a gut-wrenching account of her family's pain before a court.
Beenleigh District Court heard the man, aged in his 20s, and cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was living with his wife at the time of ongoing sexual abuse.
The victim’s mother, who can also not be identified, described the damage her former partner had inflicted on the family and the everlasting, traumatic impact that her son and daughters would live with.
“My son loved you and looked up to you, he admired you but he was scared around you and knew what you were doing was wrong. You took the innocence of a very young child away,” she said.
“I was disgusted in myself for not seeing it on my own. You made me feel like I had failed as a mother and failed to keep him safe.
“My daughters will gain the fear of people finding out their dad is one of societies’ monsters. They will gain the fear of being bullied because of you.
“What do my daughters say when people ask where their dad is?
“What you have lost is nothing compared to what we have lost.
“I thought I had found the perfect guy, a protector who would save us from harm, but I got that wrong, I failed.
“I just hope the justice system doesn’t fail my son, he deserves justice, we all do.”
On July 16 last year, police attended a mental health hospital in Ipswich, where the defendant had been admitted and he confessed to all of the offending and said it happened on a frequent basis.
The court heard the defendant habitually, sexually assaulted the victim, from when he was only three years old, when the mother was out of the house or not around.
The offending occurred from August 2019 to June 2021.
He also told the victim not to tell anyone.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, one count of unlawful treatment of a child under 16 and one count of maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child.
Judge Craig Chowdhury was scathing in his closing remarks and said he is sick and tired of seeing these cases.
“It is wrong, it is unnatural and you are going to go to jail for a long time,” he said.
“You should have been there looking after this boy and making sure he grew up in a stable home and yet you displayed no remorse.
“There is a real problem in our society and there has been so much research into the damage sexual abuse causes, it is ongoing and it spreads throughout the family.”
The defendant was sentenced to nine years behind bars and will be eligible for parole after three years.
He will also take part in a sex offenders program.
