An Eagleby man has been jailed for six years after police uncovered a shameful stash of 1500 child abuse files - just two years after he was jailed for possessing another 5000.
Thirty-year-old Travers George Lowe pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court to possessing child abuse material and using a carriage service to access said files.
On May 13, 2021, Queensland Police raided the defendant’s home in Eagleby and found 1520 files depicting child abuse material.
The content was spread across three devices, a tablet, a mobile phone and a laptop computer.
Police seized all three devices.
The majority of the images depicted children under the age of 13 and some included children under six years of age.
The court heard Lowe downloaded some of the material from a website.
Lowe was previously sentenced in 2020 in Beenleigh District Court for possession of over 5000 images of children that contained “sadistic, torturous behaviour”.
At the time he received a two-year prison sentence from Judge Craig Chowdhury.
The defendant’s legal counsel said his heavy drug use was the primary reason for his offending.
“He has been diagnosed with amphetamine and cannabis use disorder and his doctor stated he needs therapy focused upon increasing his insight into his own behaviour,” he said.
Judge Craig Chowdhury said every week he sentenced somebody for crimes of this nature.
“There is a real sickness in our society at the moment and it seems to be getting worse,” he said.
“The advent of computers has some great use but it has a dark side too.
“Police spend millions of dollars around Australia trying to rescue children from child abuse, these children are damaged, traumatised and who knows what happens to them?
“This should be a wake up call to you, that you can’t get away with this. Wake up to yourself and deal with your drug abuse.
“No normal person wants to look at child abuse material, it is abhorrent and you’ve only got yourself to blame.”
The court heard that in 2015, Lowe was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence when he stabbed his cousin in the back.
The attack caused a small hemithorax in the victim’s back and the wound had to be stapled and treated with antibiotics.
Judge Chowdhury noted Lowe’s criminal history and sentenced him to six years in prison.
Lowe will be eligible for parole on March 12, 2023.
The defendant had already served 474 days in pre-sentence custody and for his previous sentence.
