Southeast Queensland’s mayors have backed Ipswich leader Teresa Harding as the replacement for Noosa’s mayor on the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee.
The decision was announced on Friday afternoon, May 10, after a vote at today’s Council of Mayors (SEQ) board meeting.
Cr Harding will join Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner in representing the councils of southeast Queensland in the delivery of the 2032 Games.
She will fill the position vacated by former Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart.
Cr Harding said it was an immense honour to represent her fellow mayors on the Organising Committee and play a role in shaping the biggest event the region had ever seen.
“Having been a spectator during the Sydney 2000 Games, I would have never imagined that today I would be selected to be a board member of the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee,” she said.
“The Brisbane 2032 Games has the ability to galvanise our region and boost our international exposure and economic investment, unlike any other event we’ve seen before.
“This is a fantastic vote of confidence in the collaborative work we have been doing in Ipswich, as this role is really focused on working together as a region.”
Cr Harding said she would work with all the regional councils to deliver the best Games possible.
“If we can get that right, we can create a legacy that transcends the host regions, and benefits all,” she said.
“While my primary focus will be on representing southeast Queensland, the 2032 Games is a great opportunity for all Queenslanders.
“I am dedicated to building enduring benefits and a legacy that will positively impact generations to come.”
