Rugby League in Ipswich is finally back after a month off.
Players across a variety of teams have shown some great performances in round seven, including the under 17 division 1, under 17 development and under 15 competitions.
The Queensland Times has compiled a list of the Best and Fairest players from Friday night’s rugby league action.
So who are the Best and Fairest?
Prop: Zander Lane (Springfield development)
Lane was the man of the match in Springfield’s 22-10 victory over Goodna. He played solid in defence and scored a hattrick. Not only was he a try-scoring machine but he led the forwards really well.
Hooker: Jake Grey (Springfield development)
Grey started strong in the middle when on defence and in setting up the attack. Grey then switched to the back row and made plenty of solid runs and tackles.
Fullback: Junior Saifiti (Goodna U17 division 1)
At fullback Saifiti was Goodna’s best. He took some very tough carries and popped up all over the park in both attack and defence.
Centre: Xavier Wighton (Swifts development)
Wighton is another young-gun under Luke and Patrick O’Doherty. He is growing in confidence each week and is “an absolute gun centre.” Whether it is through his tough ball-running or massive heart on defence, he is a game changer that earns his starting position every game. Co-coach Luke O’Doherty said: “ He’s like a sponge. He grows with knowledge every week.”
Wing: Obede Niyonyishu (Goodna U17 division 1)
Niyonyishu played great on the wing on Friday. He got through plenty of work and scored his team’s last try to get the Eagles within two for a draw. Goodna played with 12 players, so to come away with a 22-all draw was a great effort.
Prop: Mandel Suaniu (Springfield development)
Suaniu played strongly, showing his constant effort around the park. This was through both his running and defensive efforts.
Prop: Darcy Pocock (Fassifern development)
Pocock and the Bombers took on Brothers in an arm wrestle at Redbank. Pocock was a standout in a losing side and scored a great try.
Prop: Powanga Babia (Norths U15)
The big powerful front-rower laid the platform for his side and came away with three massive hits.
Front-rower: Ozzie Avauli (Swifts development)
Avauli is a tough front-rower with a massive engine and he had an absolute blinder on Friday. He went looking for work and wasn’t content till he found it. What an asset to the team. He just kept working, and was one of the Swifts best players against Redbank.
Second-row: Jack Breuer (Norths U15)
Breuer was involved in everything on Friday night. The Tigers captain leads by example every week.
No.17: Kyle Mcpeake (Norths U15)
The smallest front-rower showed how big his engine was. The workhorse continuously drove the opposition backwards.
No.15: Taj Steindl-Corrie (Norths U15)
At fullback Steindl-Corrie added to the Norths attack and constantly threatened Springfields line.
Lock: Jaydiz Hirawani (Brothers development)
Hirawani was the man of the match in Brothers 28-6 victory over Fassifern. He led his team in both defence and attack, controlling the middle all game. Hirawani had the help of Veta Ah-you, Ryan Shepherd and Lachlan Green who also had outstanding performances.
Forward: Tautai Tuluauau (Springfield U15)
It was a team effort from Springfield to keep North’s scoreless on Friday night however Tuluauau stood out. He came off the bench and made an immediate impact with some strong hit-ups and also some strong defence.
Lock: Josiah Gray (Springfield U15)
Gray had a handy game with plenty of strong runs and some nice passes linking up with the backs.
Wing: Reegan Van Der Westen (Swifts development)
Reegan earned himself a hattrick on Friday night. His performance was inspirational, the young-gun taking to the high-ball with confidence. He scored one of the best tries this year under the high-ball.
Centre: Max Pietersen (Springfield U15)
Pietersen was Springfield’s Player of the Match. He had an outstanding game in defence and also attack, scoring two cracking tries.
Second-rower Bradley Morgan and centre Blake Theuerkauf (Norths development):
In a tight tussle with Lowood, Morgan put up a great effort in defence and Theuerkauf was outstanding in attack. Although they couldn’t get the win, coach Dennis Schofield said: “ the boys are coming together well and they’ll prove strong opponents in future games.”
Xzavier Timoteo (Springfield U15):
Timoteo, Springfield’s co-caption bagged a double on Friday night and led his team from the front. He has been selected in the Queensland U15’s team, and showed why in the Panthers 30-0 victory.
Malaki Collins and Lucious Mack-Taurino (West End development)
These boys started the game impressively on Friday night before the game was called-off due to an unfortunate injury to a Karalee player. West End coach Adam Pollard said: “We all hope he is okay and we wish him well.” The fixture between Karalee and West End was dedicated to Zye Portaz as both teams embraced him with a minute of silence
