Under 17 division 1 results:
Brothers under 17 Blue drew with Redbank under 17 Red, 22-22
Norths under 17 Blue beat Springfield under 17, 34-0
Under 17 development results:
Lowood Stags under 17 beat Fassifern under 17, 18-10
West End under 17 beat Redbank under 17 blue, 44-6
Goodna under 17 Blue beat Norths under 17 gold, 30-0
Brothers under 17 White beat Karalee under 17, 22-12
Best and Fairest:
Wing: Julian Clist (Redbank development)
Clist started on the wing, but with injuries during the game he had a go at dummy-half. Without a question he took the challenge head on. Given it was Clist’s first time at hooker, he directed the middle very well and may have just found himself a new place within the side.
Centre: Cyrus Natititi (Brothers division 1)
Natititi is usually his team’s left centre, but on Friday he played in multiple positions. From the edge to the middle and even at fullback, he never gave up. Natititi is one of those players that makes post contact meters, and beats his first defender. He is so difficult to tackle when running the ball, with speed and strength the young-gun makes 20+ meters every time he takes a hit up. On defence, his effort from start to finish inspired the team to lift on many occasions, and even forced errors from the opposition.
Centre: Cooper Read (Norths division 1)
Read had a stand out game at right centre. The strong ballrunner threatened the line with every carry. He created attacking opportunities with every touch, producing line breaks. Read crossed the line himself to score a try on the back of a well-executed backline play.
Brothers 17 White development:
Brothers halfback Cooper Rahn and five-eighth Chris Cole took control of the game at crucial times throughout the game to steer their team to a 22-12 victory over Karalee. Prop Kevin Pailegutu had a strong performance with great ball running, as well as fullback Lachlan Green and Cahill Lasika.
Halfback: Trystan (Redbank development)
Trystan started at halfback, but as the game progressed his team’s defence needed some adjustments so he ended up playing second-row to help. Trystan embraced the position-change and tackled his heart out all over the paddock.
Halfback: Ethan Sadler (Karalee development)
The young halfback returned for the Tornadoes on Friday night, putting in a performance that showed his talent moving into the future. Sadler was very strong in defence and his attacking skills were crisp, setting up two tries. He gave the boys a fighting chance against a very strong brothers side, falling short 22-12.
Prop: Douglas Avauli (Brothers division 1)
In a tough game against Redbank with three players out sick and no reserves, the Brothers man of the match, Avauli, was monumental in their lucky 22-22 draw. The prop started, and played the entire game in the middle with inspiring defence. His efforts on defence saw multiple try saving tackles, meanwhile the young props hit ups rocked the Redbank defensive line.
Hooker: Nic McKay (Karalee development)
The ‘little pocket rocket’ weighing in at 40kg played a very gusty game of rugby league against Brothers. He made plenty of tackles, and his smart footy instincts saw him make several line breaks. His delivery from dummy-half was nothing short of exceptional, giving his team the best chance to gain momentum and attack the Brothers defensive line.
Hooker: Urika Brownlie and Second rower: Cayleb Johnson (West End development)
Debutants for the West End Bulldogs on Friday Urika Brownlie and Cayleb Johnson added much needed strength to the team in their 44-6 win over Redbank Blue. With the man of the match performance from Brownlie, scoring a hat-trick from hooker and Johnson’s strong defence, they helped get the team’s first win of the season. Johnson had several line breaks and also picked up a try. Bulldogs front rower J.R Ah- Tar led the pack charging over for a double, while captain and halfback Brenton Rohweder slotted 6 from 8 off the boot.
Second-rower: Joshua Bond (Norths division 1)
“The more game time Bond gets the more destructive he is becoming for the Tigers,” coach Brett McCabe said. He powered over for two excellent tries but his hard work was most impressive, making the tough metres out of his teams half. His defence was just as strong as his hit-ups. On more than four occasions Bond was driving the Panthers forwards backwards and was a big part of the team’s effort to stop any go-forward by an enthusiastic Springfield forward pack.
Second-rower: Atrall Parker (Brothers division 1)
Parker plays well above his weight every week and has been really impressive with his attitude so far this season. Parker played the full game against Redbank, taking plenty of hit ups. These runs were timely, out of the Brothers end, in tough times when on the back foot. Parker was perfect on defence.
Honourable Mentions
Fassifern under 17 development:
Fassifern travelled to Laidley to take on the Lowood Stags on Friday. The game was played in wet conditions, reserve forward Ben Rieck opening the scoring for the Bombers with some determined running. Fullback Jayme Polkinghorne scored out wide for his team’s second try. The Bombers crossed the line twice more only to fumble the ball and be denied tries. Lowood ran away 18-10 winners in a quality contest.
Lowood Stags under 17 development:
It was a hard fought game against Fassifern for the Stags but Bock Shearman with his super defence as well as Ryley Madlen with his quick darts through the line and strong defence steered the team to a 18-10 victory. Centre Joshua Wiseman was safe in the centres, but all around it was a gutsy team effort from Lowood to come away with the win.
Goodna under 17 development:
A couple players stood out. Second-rower Elwyn Matavesi scored two solid tries. Carlin Renouf had a great game back in his home position at fullback where he got one excellent try.
Redbank division 1
Centre Frank Melelosa was damaging when running the ball, and showcased some great defence. DJ Auvea led the way from the front, playing big minutes for a prop. Maaro David played his first game for the team. He started at lock and did his job all night as a tackling machine.
